Hello there!

This is my entry for the contest. I went a little crazy with the backstory of this one so i highly recommend reading the below wall of text!

Steve has been offered a research position at the highly prestigious Obsidian Laboratories on Time Rift Island.This is the perfect opportunity for a working holiday. The pay is good and the location is full of amazing wonders. It will be just like getting paid to go on vacation as the job mostly involves exploration and discovery. They think Steve's rich background in both will be invaluable to uncovering the mysteries of the island.

The island is named after the phenomenon that is observed there. Time rifts! Since its early discovery sometime in the 1800's there have been parts of the island that are in the future and parts that are in the past. However due to conservation of energy laws the mixing of multiple time zones was resulting in the island ripping itself apart (i wonder how many people found the rifts underground :D ). That is until extensive restoration attempts were undertaken by Obsidian Laboratories who managed to stabilise the island and restore much of it to allow human interaction.

Time Rifts
There are many rifts on the island. Some small some huge. Most are harmless although some will kill you the moment you step in them. A classification system of 1 - 10 is used to indicate the dangers involved with any given pocket of time.

There is the problem of stability for many rifts. That is to say that the point in time which the pocket is in may change. One moment its the past next the future. This can result in very disturbing changes.

Another problem is the energy conservation which was mentioned earlier, responsible for the island ripping itself apart. Although we can interact with the rifts in any given length of time the energy in the system remains the same. This means if we take something our or put something in, energy from another part of the island will be sucked up or spewed out by a small rift which opens and closes in milliseconds.

Obsidian Laboratories has solved both these problems partially. You can visit the island to see how yourself.

Funding for the entire project is split between Obsidian Laboratories coffers and the Hotel and resort that has been established on the island. The nature of the island attracts very wealth minecrafters who can afford the extortionate prices to either holiday or for the businessmen hold conferences. The beauty of the island is that its completely self sufficient as it has access to many stable rifts for example where food grows - is harvested - the rift refreshes yielding crops once again! Of course none of this would be possible without Obsidian Laboratories Technology.

This is a once in a lifetime chance for Steve who has been offered the room of his choice and all access privileges!
