The ship is named after William Adger Moffett, a Medal of Honor recipient and officer in the U.S. Navy. Although Moffett was not a native aviator, he is known as the "father of naval aviation in the U.S. Navy" because he had a deep understanding of aviation and laid the foundation for naval aviation in the U.S. Navy.
