Battleship Roma was the fourth of the Vittorio Veneto class battleships and the last battleship of the glorious Italian Royal Navy (Regia Marina).Named after Rome, the capital of Italy, she was commissioned on September 18, 1938 and launched on June 9, 1940.
Vittorio Veneto class battleships were designed to compete with the new French "Dunkerque" class battleships. The main gun is 381mm caliber, but the barrel is lengthened to 50 caliber and heavier shells are fired at high initial velocity to achieve penetration and destructive power comparable to that of a 410mm gun. It is also seamless in terms of defense, combining thick horizontal armor, vertical armor second only to the Nelson (composite armor in modern terms), and Priese-style mine protection. Its engine output is also sufficient, achieving a combat speed of 30 knots.
