The USS Nevada may be the coolest battleship the US Navy ever deployed (& certainly my favorite warship of all time). Through countless years of service in both World Wars, she participated in many of the Navy's most important engagements. During the Attack on Pearl Harbor, she was the only American battleship to get underway, becoming a prime target for Japanese bombers, eventually beaching herself off Hospital Point in order to avoid blocking the entrance to the harbor. After an extensive modernization in 1942, she assisted in defending the Aleutian Islands during the Battle of Attu, after which point she sailed across the Atlantic to assist in the Normandy landings, shelling German defensive positions on D-Day, & in the following weeks during the Invasion of France. She returned to the United States in late 1944 for barrel relining, during which time she was also fitted with some of the Arizona's 14" guns. She then assisted in shore bombardment for the invasions of both Iwo Jima & Okinawa, & even arrived off the Japanese home islands, though she never bombarded them.

After the war, it was decided she was too old to stay in the fleet & was therefore unceremoniously chosen to be used as a target during Operation Crossroads. During this test, she survived two atomic bomb drops, though damaged & radioactive. She was then used as a target ship for the USS Iowa & other vessels, during which time she tanked several 16" shells & shipborne torpedoes, before finally sinking from an aerial torpedo hit on July 31, 1948. Her wreck was found in May 2020 roughly 65 nautical miles southwest of Hawaii, at a depth of 15,400ft (4700m).
