The USS Port Royal (CG-73) is a Ticonderoga-class cruiser. She was named for two naval battles in the American Revolutionary War and the American Civil War. She is 173m long, has a beam of 16.8m and a draft of 10.2m. She was built by Ingalls Shipbuilding and commissioned on the 9th July 1994 and her homeport is Pearl Harbour.


She is probably most famous for her grounding in 2009 during sea trials, which required her to be in drydock for over half a year and cost the US Navy an estimated $25-40 million. It resulted in the damage to a coral reef, and the dismissal of her captain, who was also disciplined. It was caused by a combination of misread navigation equipment, sleep-deprived commanding officer, broken equipment and an inexperienced and dysfunctional bridge team.
