Voltaire was a powerful mage. In the olden days, people will come and go to the tower to see him. With a great threat incoming from another plane of existence He sacrificed himself to cause the tower to be bound with the earth. This sealed the rift gate, causing that threat to be trapped in the rift zone, an ethereal place.
