Well, not anymore! Now, with WorldEdit, you can achieve things far greater than regular, vanilla Minecraft. The pictures above shall show just a tiny portion of the new kinds of art that can be made with the power of World Edit. Everything shown here is with the default texture pack. There are no mods other than WorldEdit being used. This will be periodically updated with new "impossiblities"

These are all possible in vanilla, you just need to know what data value to plug in in order to glitch the game into thinking things like water in the nether is fine.

I think so, here's how to do some of them without editors:
Sand on torch: Place the torch first, then sand on top.
No water source: Place the lapis first, then four water sources around the lapis. It will appear the water has no source.
Half-door: Possible via data values OR immediately (no-tick delay) breaking the top of the door after opening it in creative.
Lava sugar cane: (probably possible in-game) (no solution found)
Derp cactus: Not possible in vanilla, just found out
Nether water: Possible via data values (/give)
Lava-fed netherwart: Glitched world generation, not possible to manually place
Wtf cocoa: Glitched world generation, is possible to place if you have two total players. (3 jungle logs needed, one cocoa. Place the cocoa inside of the small log arc, and have the other guy break a log with you simultaneously. Requires luck)

With the lapis, you can see that the water is thinner at the edges.
Other than that, good analysis. I suppose Imma gonna have to step up mah game, hm?

The sand has no problem standing on torch

Regularly, sand breaks upon being on a non-solid block. IE: Torches, Mushrooms, ETC.
