The front castle of Wartenberg is the oldest and largest of the three ruins and was built in the middle of the 12th century. The remains lie on a broad rock spur.
The middle castle was probably built in the late 12th century by the Counts of Homburg.
The rear Wartenberg probably built in the 12th century. Is situated on the southernmost spur of the Wartenberg, protected on three sides by a rocky embankment and in the north by a neck ditch.
