In the Old World, magic was controlled by a select few, so sacred, that no one believed it to be real. Though despite how protected it was, it inevitably fell into the hands of evil. Enter Travis Lunar, declared a God by his followers, he sought to remake the world in his own image using a forbidden spell. The spell required he perform horrific acts, acts no normal person would ever think to commit. He completed the ritual, expecting ultimate power.
Much to his surprise, the spell backfired. Rather than power and the title of King he killed for, the spell destroyed civilization as everyone knew it. Fire spread throughout the world, obliterating everything man made aside from the clothes on peoples’ backs. Nature, of course, was spared, because Magic thrives through nature. Soon after the fire, ice followed, freezing every human in its path. This allowed the natural world to flourish, the planet renewed itself, animals close to extinction grew in numbers, all while humans were preserved in ice for 300 years.
When civilizations eventually began to thaw, they awoke to a world dominated by nature, with no remaining books or structures. All they had of the Old World were their memories, their own knowledge. Magic had given humanity a second chance, whether they would rebuild with nature or be selfish remained uncertain.
Humans did, as humans do. Some saw this as a fresh start, a way to do right by the world instead of breaking it down. The rest? Well, they knew what they knew, and they wanted their old world back. It wasn’t their fault, really, they only really knew one thing: take.
Welcome to Nystoria, a New World, a fresh start. Will you help build the world in a more humane way, or will you fall back into habits of the Old World?
Marblehold:
A small city founded by Luther Lunar in what was once a forest. On the surface, Marblehold appeared cozy and inviting, but underneath, it hid cruelty and oppression. Laws were arbitrary and punishments extreme, any crime; from theft to murder, was met with death. Civilians lived under the whims of the Stone Warden, and Marblehold as a whole functioned as the center of Luther’s iron-fisted rule.
It embodied both a semblance of order, and the dark, violent nature of its leader. One civilian in particular could take the cruelty no longer and brought Luther to his end. With the city now under the rule of Luther’s son, will things start looking up for this dreary city?
Barkhaven:
A city bigger than Marblehold, located within the trees and founded by Jeanette and Dahlia Mowery. The leaders soon became known as the Arboresses of Barkhaven, opting to work with nature rather than against it. They have respect for all living things. Its people see themselves as caretakers of nature rather than rulers over it, and their laws, medicine, architecture, and government all reflect that philosophy.
After growing old within their city, Jeanette and Dahlia passed and the people of Barkhaven elected Raven Accardi as the next Arboress. The pressure proved to be too much for the woman, though, and after naming Rhys Veldrather as the interim Arborer, she stepped down from the position.
