Minecon Server Edition (also known as MSE) was set up in September 2012 by George and Mason from AyreTV. The idea was to bring the Minecon event into Minecraft itself.
 

Minecon is a real life convention which is aimed at celebrating Minecraft. People from all around the world attend each year to meet up and share their interests in Minecraft. Many big names attend such as IntheLittleWood and BebopVox, and give a talk to people as well as answering some questions. There are also booths set up by other companies to help advertise their Minecraft related products.
