I mean I guess that people often call virginia opossums "possums", however iirc the correct term for them is "opossum" and is used for a clade of marsupial mammals only found in south america, with the only exception being the aforementioned north american virginia opossum).



Possum stands for another clade of marsupials, found in Australia(and the surrounding islands). They are not THAT closely related. The two have simmilar names because the american opossums were discovered first, so these new animals, kinda sorta resembling them, were named possums because they're simmilar, but without the O to distinguish them.



The virginia opossum is the most well known of the opossums, and the Powhatan people called it "apossum"(white dog) because of it's coloration and sort of resemblance to canids. This is one more reason why your skin is an opossum and not a possum.
