This is my entry for katress's ⟡ katress's poetry jam ⟡
This is a poem I wrote in September of 2021 when I was in a poem-writing phase. It's a story of a poor man walking home, dreaming about his future. But as he crosses the street lost in thought, he gets hit by a car, ultimately ending his life. It's sad, I know, but it was kinda based on how I was feeling at the time.
Enjoy.
An Empty Street
by Creative_Kylee
The night sings its sweet, sweet song.
I walk down an empty street as the melodies prolong.
The air is chilly as the cool weather rolls in,
And only here can you see the scene begin.
Rain dots the sidewalk in the silent alley,
And I dream long and hard for a great finale.
For I am only a simple man on a quest.
To concur the valley of imagination no less!
But man can only dream,
Of such a place of joy.
Though it’s not as it may seem,
As the dream is only a decoy.
But I should stop dreaming,
And start on my way home.
My house is withered,
Even so much turned to stone.
Covered in moss, grass, and withered wood galore.
The windows are broken glass, just like the floor.
Fallen to bits, pieces, for someone so poor.
But you haven’t yet seen what lies beyond the core.
Crossing the street in the darkness,
A screech of rubber to cement shatters the rain.
I turn my head to address,
What I can assume are tires against the terrain.
Blinding lights blur through the rain drops, as time slows down.
It’s hard to even grasp something so profound.
It takes one blink before a collision commends.
The pain is far too intense for my consciousness to comprehend.
My chest burns with a cavity so compressed,
And I can feel my ribs turn to dust in my chest.
My body turns to jelly without even a flinch,
As I fly over the instrument of execution with a searing pinch.
Disgusting red liquid flies in the air,
As I’m being hoisted over the automobile.
The pain is something I cannot share,
For it is so much for one man to bear.
The pavement moves at me with abnormal speed,
And it's saddening to see how much a man can bleed.
Then everything turns dark like shadows in the night.
For I can at last finally see the light..
