The shading isn't bad for a first attempt. However it would look much nicer if you shaded the hair, sunglasses and clothes instead of just shading the skin.

I did, but apparently my computer screen is on high contrast or some crap. looks way better in my editing programs. I'll just raise the contrast in those areas--thanks for the feedback

No problem, my old laptop had the opposite problem, there wasn't enough contrast in the display so everything looked really washed out/ faded. Because of this I ended up adding too much contrast to my skins and then they looked crazy when I viewed them on another computer.
