The Black-billed Gull or Tarapuka, is the "younger cousin" to the Red-billed Gull.
These gulls are endemic to New Zealand and are more often found inland around lakes and braided rivers where they breed.
Their longer and thinner bill helps in catching the smaller prey that's around in their habitats, compared to the slightly larger bills of the Red-bill Gull which is more suited for catching small fish.
The Black-billed Gull has the unfortunate status of being critically endangered!
Populations around New Zealand are declining rapidly and they have a real risk of extinction.
Unfortunately there seems to be a real stigma with gulls, with a common stereotype of being obnoxious and "flying rats".
However that is really not the case, as especially with Tarapuka who are very polite and sweet. The bad guy character society has put on gulls has made conservation rather difficult as people just don't realise how at risk some gull species are.
