The Paradise Shelduck is a large, goose-like duck endemic to New Zealand.
They're sexually dimorphic, meaning males and females look different from one another.
Males having an overall darker appearance while females are brown with a white head.

While they are a protected species, they have done well and continued to thrive after human settlement.
As such, there are legal hunting seasons where hunters may shoot these birds to eat.

More often heard before they're seen, they have a distinctive and loud honking/wheezing call, that also differs depending on the sex.
