My explanation of his backstory as I remember it from the movies:
Captain Salazar hunted pirates, until one day he was chasing a pirate ship when Jack Sparrow basically got everyone to help out with a tight turn that Captain Salazar couldn’t make. So he was forced to sail into a cursed rock formation thingamajigger and they all basically turned into cursed floaty dead people, until one day, many many years later, Sparrow makes a grave mistake and accidentally frees Salazar and his zombie dudes…
