During the period of Spanish rule, Central America was filled with these soldiers. Their main objective was to keep Spanish land under control, for their greatest asset at the time was sugar plantations. Eventually, many revolutions occured during the 18th and 19th centuries, and Spain lost almost all of their land in the Americas. It was only until the U.S. conqured Cuba, did the Spanish "Empire" end. Eventually we left Cuba and let them become their own Dictatorship with great healthcare. Yey.
