"A l'assaut des ponts!"


In 1866, Emperor Napoléon III sent a military mission to Japan following a request from the Shogunate through Shibata Takenaka, their emissary in Europe, to modernize their military.
The mission arrived at Yokohama on January 14, 1867 and were welcomed by the commander of the French Far East Squadron Admiral Pierre-Gustave Roze and French representative to Japan, Léon Roches. They were able to train a formidable force consisted of the best of the Shogunate military, an elite force called "Denshūtai". The corps was composed of 800 men. They were equipped with advanced Minié-type Enfield guns and state-of-the-art Chassepot bolt-action rifles*, vastly superior to the percussion Gewehr (notably Bavarian M1842 muskets) smoothbore guns and matchlock arquebuses possessed by the other Shogunal troops (Vary, units like "Sampeitai" were equipped with various Gewehr muskets, Aizu units were equipped with Bavarian M1842 muskets, and other domains still have tanegashima arquebuses on their roster).
