It had no age, no gender, and more importantly, no soul. It's one of those things you never questioned the existence of, and one that may never have an answer. But at the heart of it all, the real question is...
Why so nightmares exist?
Some say it's a manifestation of all the things you keep inside yourself. Those who do can't keep secrets.
Some say they've never had a nightmare. Those who do lie.
And some wont answer you, for fear of her. Those who don't are the ones we're dealing with.

Her. But is it really? It doesn't look like a he, but you can't call her an it.

She, her, or in ancient terms, the Dream Eater.
The dream eater feeds on your nightmares. She consumes every bit of it. But she keeps coming back, knowing each night that they will have more. Why?
Because humans make their own fear off of what they don't understand.
It's a continuous cycle of non mutual benefits. But all that happens is she grows stronger.
It doesn't always end this way, though.
You just have to chose, to chose to not be afraid.
But of course, most people can't.
