Bucellarii Guard Axeman
Bucellarii were prominent in the late Roman and Byzantine empires. They were not supported by the state but rather by some individual such as a general or governor. They served as household troops. Since they were privately funded, they tended to be better equipped than the regulars. The Bucellarii were also more elite, skilled, and had higher incentive to fight. In essence, they were a private army. During Belisarius's campaign, he employed upwards to 7,000 Bucellarii to bolster his force.
