I would check out some hue shifting and color tutorials. Skinning tutorials in general.

I've built my PMC on skinning and shading skins my way, I've improved since the beginning, and I don't plan on making skins based on other people's shading techniques.

Sorry, I just had to get it out there.

hue shifting has nothing to do with copying others, it just makes your colors used better.

There is also a difference from keeping in touch and developing personal style and just improving skins.
