He didn't directly kill them. He was kind of caught up in the mess. Plus the royal family were not doing their job supporting the people. The family was greedy and didn't care about the health of their subjects, thus some communist Russians believed it was just to erase the Tsar.

Keep in mind that the early 1900s up to the end of WWII was a pretty messed up time. It was the actions of the radical Europeans that developed what we believe today to be insane and disturbing.

The Russian tzardom was pretty shit to their people, especially all the ethnicities that were giving no rights just for not being Russian. It was very justified.
