Mimir was once the cream of the crop for the Aesir gods of Norse mythology. he was extremely wise, and was beheaded during an enormous war between the aesir and vanir gods. after he was killed, his body sat in the water until Odin, the king of the gods came along. Odin and Mimir had been great friends, and Odin brought mimir back to consciousness in the form of a sentient severed head.
