One of the seven Endless, inconceivably powerful beings older and greater than gods, Morpheus is both lord and personification of all dreams and stories, all that is not in reality (which, in turn, Dream may define by his existence).
During the world war two, a sect learned to summon one of the seven Endless... They wanted to summon death, to become immortals but instead, they summoned Morpheus and imprisoned him.
