The Standard helmet of the Nationale Volksarmee was the M56 Stahlhelm, which was developed during WW2 under the Third Reich, but was refused because it resembled a Russian helmet. The Helmet was considered one if the most protective steel helmets, and became a signature mark of the East German Army.
