During the Dance of the Dragons, Simon surrendered Harrenhal at the sight of Caraxes, Prince Daemon Targaryen's dragon. Simon and his grandsons were then held as hostages by Daemon. Simon was freed from captivity when Ser Criston Cole, Lord Commander of the Kingsguard, recovered the castle.
