~~Quentin (Fifth in Order) Robbinson (Son of Robert) of Canterbury

~Quentin was born in September 1364. the fifth son in a family of 12 to Robert (Brilliance) Bowe (Bow Maker)in Canterbury, England. Robert had several wives throughout his life, four of those wives were noblewomen. As a child, Quentin learned to make bows with his father, as his older brothers had all become pages, esquires, and knights, being of noble blood, when he was young, before he was 4 years old. Quentin was always caught daydreaming about being a knight, and was constantly shut down by other children in Canterbury. Despite the other children, he was still hopeful of becoming a knight, even though it was rare for non-nobility to even be considered for pagedom. He typically spent his work days shaping bows out of different woods with his father, but that soon changed.

~When a knight was staying at a local inn in town, Sir Alistair (Defender of Mankind) the Brave of London, whom had heard of the other four sons of Robert, learned there was a fifth, he sought the boy out, even though Quentin was not of noble blood. The good reputations of his brothers had gone far, enough that it would bless Quentin to be noticed. So at 7, he was woken up to a conversation downstairs in the shop between his father and the knight. When he saw the knight, his armor, his coat of arms-- symbolic fabric worn over armor--, he was overjoyed, but kept his composure. When Sir Alistair saw him come down the stairs, he introduced himself to the boy, and told the Quentin to follow him on the path to knighthood. Robert was proud, but befuddled, but he did not protest about his son leaving and becoming a page.

~After that, Quentin was placed in the house of Sir Alistair. There he was bestowed the title of page. Huntsmen and falconers taught him how to hunt, and priests taught him religion, reading and writing. The new page learned to fight by imitating his knight, and practiced combat with wooden swords and lances. When Quentin turned 14, he became an esquire-- or, more simply, squire. In a religious ceremony, Quentine received a consecrated sword from a priest in London and swore to use it for religious and honorable purposes. After this ceremony, he took his place in Sir Alistair's household and attended to his duties. While there were different esquires for specific duties, Quentin was trained as the Esquire of Arms, meaning he cleaned and maintained the armor and swords. During this time, he learned to serve and mastered the intricacies of social behavior and chivalry.

~Besides carrying out his duties in Sir Alistair's household, Quentin learned the martial arts of being a knight. He learned how to handle horses and continued practicing with wooden swords and lances -- sometimes with his knight. Often, Quentin wore chain-mail armor to get used to its weight, and sometimes even danced in hauberks-- or chain-mail shirts. As the esquire got older, he exercised and trained in full armor. Quentin also assisted Sir Alistair in combat, at tournaments and in travel to foreign lands-- carrying and cleaning armor, taking care of the horses, packing baggage and so forth.

~Upon turning 21, an esquire was ready to be knighted, and Quentin was no exception. He was invested as a knight during the wedding of Sir Alistair, in October 1385, as the knight was thinking of retiring to his estates. The wedding took place in Canterbury Cathedrial, and the clergy confered Quentin's knighthood. The knighting ceremony had involved a ritual bath on the eve of the ceremony, in which the would-be knight was dressed in white. Then an all-night prayer vigil had begun, with Quentin's arms on the altar. The kneeling esquire had sworn an oath, which included-- but not limited to -- the following: That he would always defend a lady, he would speak only the truth, he would be loyal to his lord, he would be devoted to the church, he would be charitable and defend the poor and helpless, he would be brave, when on a quest he would remove his armor and arms only while sleeping, he would never avoid dangerous paths out of fear, he would be on time for any engagement of arms like a battle or tournament, upon returning to his home or lord's court from an adventure he would always tell of his escapades, if taken prisoner he would give up his arms and horse to his opponent and not fight the opponent again without the opponent's consent, he would fight only one-on-one against an opponent.

~After which, the master of the ceremony dubbed the newly knighted Quentin on the shoulders with a ceremonial sword. The newly knighted man, Sir Quentin of Canterbury, then dressed in armor, received his sword, mounted his horse and participated in some martial games to demonstrate his skills as part of the celebration. And he did, even through his life he was a good example of a knight. Sir Quentin was eventually dubbed as the bravest and boldest from his family-- giving him the title Sir Quentin the Bold of Canterbury.
