The Smoking Gunns were a professional wrestling tag team of kayfabe brothers Billy Gunn (Monty Sopp) and Bart Gunn (Mike Polchlopek). They portrayed cowboys in the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) from 1993 to 1996, where they held the WWF Tag Team Championship three times. Sopp was well suited for this gimmick, as he was trained as a bull rider while attending Oviedo High School in Oviedo, Florida. After a stint as a professional bull rider in Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association, Sopp left the profession in his early-20s in order to pursue a career as a professional wrestler.

Polchlopek and Sopp began teaming as the "Long Riders" in the International Wrestling Federation out of Orlando, Florida. Polchlopek wrestled as Brett Colt, while Sopp was known as Kip Winchester. The Smoking Gunns made their WWF debut on April 5, 1993 on the day after WrestleMania IX, defeating jobbers Barry Horowitz and Reno Riggins. During their televised debut, Brett Colt was renamed Bart Gunn and Kip Winchester was renamed Billy Gunn. From their debut until January 1994, they would fire blanks in the arena with real guns, but then they received complaints from families that they were scaring children, which caused them to stop firing guns in the arenas.

The Gunns were scheduled to compete in a tournament for the vacant Tag Team Championship after Shawn Michaels and Diesel, the champions, began feuding. Injuries prevented the Gunns from entering, however. One day after their replacements, Bob "Spark Plug" Holly and the 1-2-3 Kid, won the belts, the Gunns returned to win the title on January 23, 1995 episode of Monday Night Raw. By 1995, Billy and Bart both shaved their mustaches and cut their long hair off. At WrestleMania XI, the Gunns faced Owen Hart and a mystery partner, who was revealed to be Yokozuna and lost the belts.

On the September 25 episode of Raw, Gunns regained the Tag Team Championship from Hart and Yokozuna, beginning their second tag title reign. On February 15, 1996, the Smoking Gunns forfeited the titles when Billy was forced to undergo neck surgery.

Billy recovered quickly, the Gunns won their final championship three months later by defeating The Godwinns at In Your House 8: Beware of Dog. Following this victory, Sunny left the Godwinns to manage the Gunns later the team was called "Sunny and her Gunns". Sunny was a heel manager, which led to Gunns turning villains as they wrestled more aggressively, acting more arrogantly and teaming with other heels. Sunny manipulated the Gunns, causing the brothers to argue. Sunny and Billy had an on-screen relationship, which bothered Bart. Gunns eventually lost the titles to Owen Hart and the British Bulldog in September 1996 at In Your House 10: Mind Games.

Sunny left the team because she only wanted to be a manager for title holders. Billy, frustrated with losing both the title and Sunny, began having miscommunications with Bart. On the October 27 episode of Superstars, Billy eventually turned against Bart by walking out of a match against New Rockers. Bart, still managed to win the match. This led Gunns to implode and feud with each other. The two former partners had a decisive match on the June 9, 1997 episode of Raw is War, where Billy, who had changed his character to "Rockabilly", defeated Bart.

Billy dropped the Rockabilly gimmick, and he became "Badd Ass" Billy Gunn when he formed the New Age Outlaws with Road Dogg. They quickly rose to the top of the tag team ranks and won the Tag Team Championship from the Legion of Doom on November 24. In a Dumpster match at WrestleMania XIV Cactus Jack and Chainsaw Charlie defeated the Outlaws for the Tag Titles. The next night on Raw, the New Age Outlaws won the Tag Team Championship for a second time by defeating Chainsaw and Cactus in a Steel cage match, but only after interference from Triple H, Chyna, and X-Pac. After the match, the Outlaws officially became members of D-Generation X (DX).

The Outlaws defeated Mankind in a handicap match to win the titles for the third time. In December, the Outlaws lost the title to The Big Boss Man and Ken Shamrock from The Corporation. The Outlaws won their fourth tag team championship by defeating The Rock 'n' Sock Connection in September 1999. The Outlaws won their fifth Tag Team Championship after defeating Mankind and Al Snow.

On SmackDown!, Gunn won the Intercontinental Championship from Eddie Guerrero. However, the title reign was short-lived, as Chris Benoit defeated him for the title two weeks later at Armageddon.

In a 2001 match on Sunday Night Heat, Gunn was defeated by Chuck Palumbo, who recently left The Alliance to join the WWF. After the match, Gunn suggested that they form a tag team. Palumbo agreed, and Billy and Chuck quickly rose to the top of the tag team division. Initially they were a generic tandem, but they were given a gimmick where they grew increasingly affectionate toward each other, showing evidence of a storyline homosexual relationship. In February 2002, Billy and Chuck defeated Spike Dudley and Tazz to win the WWF Tag Team Championship for the first time as a team. After winning the titles, Billy and Chuck found a "Personal Stylist" in the ambiguously flamboyant Rico.

At Judgment Day, Rikishi and Rico (Rikishi's mystery partner of Mr. McMahon's choosing) defeated Billy and Chuck for the WWE Tag Team Championship after Rico accidentally hit Chuck with a roundhouse kick. Billy and Chuck quickly won the title back two weeks later on SmackDown! with Rico's help. They held the championship for almost a month before losing it to the team of Edge and Hollywood Hulk Hogan on the July 4 episode of SmackDown!

On the September 5 edition of SmackDown!, after Billy lost a match to Rey Mysterio, Chuck proposed to Billy, asking him to be his "partner for life" and gave him a wedding ring. Billy agreed, and one week later, on the September 12 episode of SmackDown!, Billy and Chuck had their wedding ceremony. However, just before they tied the knot, they revealed that the entire ordeal was a publicity stunt and disavowed their on-screen homosexuality, admitting that they were just friends. On November 1, 2004, Sopp was released from his WWE contract.

On January 26, 2014 during the Royal Rumble Kickoff Show, Gunn and Road Dogg (New Age Outlaws) beat Cody Rhodes and Goldust to win the WWE Tag Team Championship. On March 3, the Outlaws lost the Tag Team Championship to The Usos. On November 13, 2015, WWE officially announced that Sopp was released from his WWE contract after failing a test for performance-enhancing drugs.

Billy was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2019 as a member of D-Generation X.
