Probably because a lot of the aesthetic in the first Little Nightmares game (Particularly the last two levels) is based off/inspired by Japanese culture.

I personally don't find it that outright scary it's more so just like ambient and the monsters are kinda creepy looking. It's a very good game tho. (The second game I'd say is quite a bit more nerve-wracking than the first-)
