The Mothman is a legendary Cryptid found in my homestate of West Virginia, specifically in Mason County (especially the city of Point Pleasant). It is described as being about 6 1/2 to 7 ft. tall, has a humanoid body, sharp claws and teeth, large bat-like, butterfly-like or moth-like wings with a 15-20 ft. wingspan, is blackish in color and has a moth-like head with glowing red eyes, although he is sometimes described as having no head and his glowing red eyes are on the center of his chest. Some say the Mothman was the result of mistaken identity when people are really seeing Sandhill Cranes or Owls. Some say he was a genetic mutation that the military was going to use as a super weapon, but it escaped. Some say he's an extraterrestrial lifeform. Nobody knows for sure, but the stories have persisted for decades. The sightings first started in the late 1960s, when people claim to have seen a huge, humanoid, moth-like creature with glowing red eyes chasing them while they were driving down the road at night before disappearing into the forest. The creature was officially name the Mothman, and sightings have been reported ever since. The legends say the Mothman appears just before disaster strikes. It's unknown if he's trying to warn us of the disasters, if he's causing them or if it's just a coincidence. However, the most famous Mothman incident was the infamous Silver Bridge Collapse. What happened was the Mothman was reportedly sighted on top of the Silver Bridge, before he took off and flew away. Then all of a sudden, for no apparent reason, the Silver Bridge collapsed, killing several people, with only one surviving. Since then, there haven't been many sightings of the Mothman, but he's still out there. The legend has become so popular that Point Pleasant attracts thousands of tourists every year to visit the Mothman museum, see the Mothman statue or attend the Mothman Festival held every Fall. Long live the Mothman!
