The Jersey Devil, also known as the Leeds Devil, is a Cryptid report to roam the Pine Barrens of New Jersey and sometimes Pennsylvania. It is described as standing roughly 40 feet tall, has brown fur, a horse head, goat horns, clawed hands, hooves, dragon wings and a long tail that ends in a pitchfork shape. The legend says that long ago, a woman named Mother Leeds was pregnant with her 13th child. She was mad about this because her husband was never around to help care for the children. So, she angrily shouted a curse upon the child saying, "Let this one be a devil!" Eventually, when the child was born, it was just a normal baby. But all of a sudden, the child transformed into a horrible monster that is now known as the Jersey Devil. The creature killed the other children, but spared the mother, and flew out through the chimney and disappeared in the night, letting out an ear piercing screech. However, some accounts of the story say that Mother Leeds was a witch and the child's father was Satan himself. Sightings have been reported ever since, but not as frequently these days. Additionally, someone came up with a big-time hoax about the Jersey Devil. He claimed he captured the creature and put it on display. But in reality, he took a taxidermy kangaroo, painted green stripes on its back and stitched bat wings to it. The most likely theory on what the Jersey Devil is, if it doesn't turn out to be a monster, is that it is a species of bat called the Hammerhead bat, an ugly looking species of bat from Africa that might have been accidentally shipped to America during the slave trades.
