Urza is a character that appears in several of the Magic the Gathering Books.

He starts out as an ordinary person but through the course of the books goes from being an archaeologist's assistant to becoming a mage with near god-like powers.
The "birth" of Urza Planeswalker:
At the end of The Brother's War, between the armies of Urza and his brother Mishra, Urza Unleashed the unknown power of the Golgothian Sylex. This released an enormous magical explosion which destroyed both armies, the island of Argoth and caused the weather patterns to change wildly which eventually resulted in an ice age. But the blast did more than destroy. It also awoke the sleeping "spark" within Urza.
At the point of the blast he had become a Planeswalker. An immortal being with fantastic magical power, able to cross into the different worlds of the multiverse with a thought. And with his new powers he, as well as his assistant, thought it best for him to leave after all of the destruction he had caused. Thus began the journey of Urza Planeswalker
