Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov was a Russian revolutionary, Soviet politician, and political theorist who served as the first and founding head of government of Soviet Russia from 1917 to 1924 and of the Soviet Union from 1922 to 1924. He was the founder and leader of the Bolsheviks, which led the October Revolution which established the world's first socialist state. Over the course of the Russian Civil War, Lenin's government consolidated power in a one-party state governed by the Communist Party. Ideologically a Marxist, his developments of the ideology, particularly its theories of party, imperialism, the state, and revolution, are known as Leninism.
