It's ok if you don't know, I just figured I'd ask. Can't find a solid answer anywhere. And seeing as you made a 101st airborne skin I'd thought you would have an idea.
For your question, I would still prefer the colour of the reference photo as the base color since I have a M42 jacket and some other gear that the colour is very close to the one of the reference photo that. I think it is hard to find a solid base uniform colour like almost all modern camouflage. If you want to make the color as close as the real one, just find more photo with sufficient light but not artwork photo. Since some of my old skin are base on artwork color but the I am not satisfy for the final output now.
Also, if you want to do WW2 soldier, Dragon 1/6 figure would be nice reference. just select the color between the brightest and darkest area as the base color.
