I don't think the transparency worked. You might have to change the block model or something.

I did a little research, and it turns out the vanilla renderer has hardcoded configurable alpha values for select blocks such as water, ice, etc, and sets alpha to either 100% or 0% for every other block for some reason. So, I wouldn't be able to add transparency to it without the use of mods, which defeats the "vanilla" part. :/
