Halcyon [16x] — Programmer Remastered (1.13 — 1.19.3) Minecraft Texture Pack

What it is:

Programmer Art has largely been left to gather dust following the 1.14 Texture Update — Mojang only updates its compatibility with newer versions of the game and nothing more. As a result there remains prominent issues and disparity between blocks and items, both old and new -- like Netherrack & Nylium for example -- when one uses the built-in Programmer Art resource pack.

Halcyon [16x] is a vanilla-styled resource pack meant to act as a compromise between both Modern Art (or Jappa Art) and Programmer Art. It aims to offer a classic and nostalgic experience for those who've stuck with the game since it first released over a decade prior, while introducing objectively much-needed changes for many blocks and items -- like the new color tones and palettes in use -- for newer users to enjoy, and tries to remain faithful to the core identity of what made Minecraft special.

Many issues are addressed and more, and all provided to you courtesy of a year and many months of hard work and dedication by yours truly.

What it isn't:

While many resource packs rely upon built-in assets and textures in order to function, Halcyon [16x] is divorced from standard Programmer Art, meaning it can be and should be used without ever having to toggle Programmer Art on, alongside your choice of supplementary packs for things like weapons, armor, HUD, etc. This is meant to be a replacement for built-in Programmer Art, but naturally the translation of older textures is not 100% accurate, so expect some slight differences to a number of items and blocks.

Any minor deviation or incorrect pixel I had to make was done as a consequence of the new palette, or for clarity's sake. Almost all textures have been addressed save for a remaining handful that I may or may not eventually get to, including mobs.

What's included:

  • Almost all items including foodstuffs, weapons, tools & armor
  • Almost all pre-1.14 blocks including wood variants, netherrack, stones & more
  • Many pre-1.14 mobs, including Creepers, Pigs, Boats & more
  • Modified blocks & mobs from 1.14 and beyond, including Tinted Glass, Crimson/Warped Wood, Piglins, and more
  • Connected Texture support via OptiFine or Continuity (highly recommended)

15 Update Logs

1/27/23 — 2023 Refresh : by Jesha 01/27/2023 6:40:05 pmJan 27th

Good day, friends! We bring an end to January with the new Halcyon [16x] update for 1.19.3!

This update addresses a number of mistakes in the textures from its previous release, namely dialing back the experimental additions made during the Halcyon+ release. The largest changes include the addition of more mob textures such as the Villager, Illagers, Livestock, and corrections to outstanding textures such as Prismarine and the Sandstone tileset, and much much more.

I will explain many of the changes best as I can, while also discussing the future of this project -- don't worry, I'm not shutting it down or going on hiatus again. Let's get started, shall we?

What's New?

+Added remastered textures for
  Cod (Raw, Cooked, & Bucketed)
  Salmon (Raw, Cooked, & Bucketed)
Tropical Fish (Raw & Bucketed)
  Pufferfish (Raw & Bucketed)
Armor [Entity] (Leather, Chain, Iron, Gold, & Diamond)
+Updated textures for:

"Polished Cobblestone" (Furnace, Redstone Components, etc.) - to be more faithful to original release textures
Piston & Sticky Piston - to be more faithful to original release textures
Sandstone (Regular, Cut, Smooth, & Chiseled) - color corrected & quantized to be even more accurate

+Added remastered textures for:

+Updated textures for:
Creeper - redrawn to be even more accurate
Villager (Nitwit profession) - to be more faithful to original release textures
Player (Alex & Steve) - updated and tweaked to use 1.19.3 colors and to support legacy versions (pre-1.19.3)
Dragon (Fireball) - compromise between Bedrock Edition fireball sprite & original Programmer Art texture (personal preference)

+Updated pack.png
+Updated pack.mcmeta to version 12 (1.19.3)
- Removed following experimental additions from Halcyon+ release:
  Rounded Sun & Moon
  Fluff.png Clouds
  Rounded Spyglass lens
  RubyDung/Classic Cobblestone
  Piglin (Normal, Brute, Zombified)

Now, let's address an Elephant in the room with this update:

What happened to Halcyon+?

During December, I made the decision to remove these changes as they did not entirely fit the original philosophy of Halcyon [16x], such as the Piglin textures which were released erroneously as they were not intended to be for the public version. The textures themselves, while of good quality, would be better suited for their own release whether as part of an addon for Halcyon [16x] or part of other projects I have in the works. For now, they will remain archived as part of the Halcyon+ release available via the download links above, so if you have use of the assets for your own work then you may find them there.

As for this project, Halcyon [16x] will undergo a wind-down phase where I will finish the remaining textures yet to be covered, and monitor the active changes being made by Mojang to the game that may effect compatibility with this resource pack. This includes the recent experimental feature involving armor trimming, as Halcyon and Vanilla do not use the same sprites for armor (itemized and entity.) I will await a final release of these experimental features, likely when 1.20 comes out, before I make any additional compatibility changes in this regard. However I will continue to update the version number otherwise. Expect little changes from here until 1.20!

NOTICE: If you use this texture pack with any of the 1.20 experimental features, then be warned there may be some texture errors! The ONLY supported versions are the full release versions 1.13 - 1.19.3!

And that's all I've got for this update log. I hope you enjoy this 2023 Refresh of Halcyon [16x], and I look forward to your thoughts and comments below. As always, take care and stay safe, and have a happy and belated New Year!

I didn't know netherrack and the other stoneish textuers were based on the classic-est stone! That's a fun tidbit.

You see this a lot in older games where they reuse sprites in order to save on development costs or time, so I imagine Notch (who was not very artistically inclined) simply didn't want to throw away good textures if it meant he could reuse them.
As far as I know, the cobblestone texture is ubiquitous in 4-5 textures but there could be more that I'm not aware of. Even the Beta 1.7 revision is based on it to some degree.
