This is mc_skeletons, a texture pack that replaces the default skeleton with a more anatomically accurate version. It includes a new texture:skeleton.png and a model file for use with OptiFine:skeleton.jem
Requirements:
  • Java Edition 1.20.4 (though I’ve tested it working up through 1.21.9)
  • OptiFine (I’m personally running Forge 49.1.10 with OptiFine for 1.20.4)

I spent around 6 hours creating this pack, using reference material including a full 3D skeleton, a 3D skull model, and comparisons to other “better skeleton” textures I found online. The result is a lightweight, optimized pack that makes skeletons look closer to the real thing while still fitting into vanilla Minecraft.

Future plans for this pack:
  • Add three subtle texture variations for the skeleton (done, so far there are 4 additional, more to come)
  • Rework models and textures for other skeleton-related mobs (stray, wither skeleton, etc.)
  • Introduce texture variations for those as well

Polish pass +2 new “natural” base variants for mc_skeletons.

What’s new:
  • Default Variant 1 & 2 – very subtle color/texture shifts with tiny anatomical differences (e.g., missing 4th tooth in one profile; slight vertebra count variation).
  • Hand/Wrist Fix – corrected the left-hand palm/wrist twist on the skeleton model.
  • pack.png Optimized – smaller size.
  • Texture Tweaks – darker interior on Chest-Burst for better depth; small contrast/noise adjustments across faces and select body panels to increase natural variety at a glance.
What is next?
  1. More variants are in production (burned, shackled, overgrown, ancient, headless....).
  2. I’ll add spawn weights for each texture so their in-game frequency roughly mirrors real medieval causes of death/age distribution (injury, warfare/accidents > advanced age, etc.). I’ll publish a simple table with the weights so it’s transparent and tweakable.
