I think gimp is better to make texture packs, and I use it too. But game maker's sprite editor is useful to rotate sprites, so maybe best way to make texturepacks is to use both gimp (or some other good image editor) and game maker.

Many people use paint and such to make their packs but I am actually using Game maker 8.1 sprite editor! Game maker 8.1 can be downloaded in lite version free on yoyogames.com. Then I use the sprite editor (sprite is like the picture shown on the screen) to make differnet parts of the pack such as the terrain.png and items.png. Then I save them in a special folder, then zip it and put it in .minecrafts texture pack folder. Done and done!

Haha! I never thought to use that, I've had it gamer maker 8.1 for a while now I just never thought to use that, and the paint program doesn't work because when you make torches it gives it a white background not clear...But I have been using Gimp but i will try Gamer Maker, Thank you.
