    this may not work, but for me I change the mcmeta version then use this to convert it but it is not consistent

    Yes optifine is needed since Java cant see different book textures, only one which is Enchanted_book which is the default texture. Optifine makes it so that Minecraft can relate different textures to different types of books.

    I played with the texture pack and assume it DOES need Optifine! (I played without optifine and I didn't get anything but high def., normal looking books)
