The Fox and the Crane

A fox invited a Crane to dinner and provided nothing special for her guest except a vegetable soup, which was served on a large, flat stone plate. Because of the breadth of the plate and its long neck, the crane could not eat the soup every time it tried, and its anguish over the inability to eat provided the fox with much fun.

The crane, when it had its chance, invited the fox to dinner, and placed before them a jug with a long narrow mouth, so that the crane could easily insert its neck and enjoy its contents at will. The fox, on the other hand, unable even to prove it, found an appropriate compensation in the manner of her own hospitality.
