Level 46 : Master Wizard
This is a resource pack based on arguably one of the greatest games ever created: The Legend of Zelda, Oracle of Seasons, although there are some textures and sprites based on other Zelda games (mostly Oracle of Ages and Link's Awakening, as one might expect). The pack tries to emulate the Oracle of Seasons world as much as possible without compromising the Minecraft look and feel. While some textures may be quite a bit lighter or darker than in the default texture pack, every texture is still recognisable and as similar as possible to the originals. This means that this pack can easily be used as your primary minecraft texture pack and not just as a temporary gimmick.

The Seasons in this pack are biome-based, which means that all 4 seasons will appear in every world at any given time (kind of like how in the original game seasons are also technically location-based, rather than time-based). This pack does not use the regular Minecraft biome system, which is why you'll need Optifine to make this pack work.

The full version also uses sounds and music from the Oracle series. The music's quite loud, so beware and maybe slide the Music slider down a bit.

Additional Notes

- Requires Optifine
- Most of the textures were ripped by me, but some of them come from either vgmaps.com, spriters-resource.com or zeldalegends.net.

- The Legend of Zelda and most of the things in this pack are owned by Nintendo Inc. and are used under Fair Use. Anything else can be used freely (although it would be nice of you to notify me beforehand), as long as you do not claim it as your own and link back to this thread when distributing publicly.
- Special thanks to Knightworm for some of the newer textures and keeping this pack alive for a few years after I had abandoned it.
CreditKnightworm for some of the textures, Nintendo and Capcom for the design of the original game

Hello friend, your texture pack is missing a few ocean monument textures and the new door model textures. Rabbits, aswell.

Love the pack, though beware 1.8 is on the horizon so get ready for the update pests!
A few months ago I added everything which was included in the 1.8 beta, so I don't think 1.8 should give me a lot of trouble. I might forget about the release, though, so it might take me a few days to update.
Can you update to 1.7.10?
I'll see what I can do. Expect an update within a couple of hours.

EDIT: I can't find anything missing, is there a texture which isn't compatible yet? The pack was made 1.8-compatible a while ago, so 1.7 shouldn't be a problem, I think.
oh ok becuase it says version 1.7.8 in the game version you might want to fix that EDIT: what i ment is that the fourm thing said 1.7.8 . Also Banners have been added so you might want to get into the snapshot and find a texture :)

hahah, missingno...
water textures are bugged....
edit: it only happens with mcpatcher.
Are you referring to the bottom texture? If so, I'm afraid I haven't found a way of fixing it yet. It didn't do this before, so I'm kind of hoping the fault lies with MCPatcher.

As a general announcement: I've managed to reduce the file size by a full 100kB (0.1 MB) by adding "A Date with Rosa" to the Nether music. I'm replaying Oracle of Seasons for the nth time and it struck me that this would be quite a fun tune to add to the Nether, so here it is.
for some strange reason.... optifine works much better than mcpatcher....
Interesting. Does everything else (connected textures, random mobs, seasons, etc.) work as expected? If so, it might be worth advising it instead of MCPatcher.

I haven't really tried optifine, but it does seem to do whatever I need MCPatcher to do, as well as apparently helping the framerate and performance, about which I've been getting a few complaints. Hmmmm... I'll look into it. Thanks for the tip.
I've discovered 2 problems when using optifine with the current pack:
- Talls grass and tall fern do not change in different biomes.
- Random mobs are not affected by their .properties files, which means that gibdo-moblins show up in the nether and subrosians show up in the default world, amongst other things.
I'll look into fixing those and perhaps a few more problems which might pop up, and if that works I'll suggest optifine instead of MCPatcher. In any case, the water textures do behave like they should in optifine, so that's nice.
Bad news: I can't get optifine to do everything I want it to, so until it updates that will not be an option.
Good news: I fixed the water bug when using MCPatcher, so I guess the bad news doesn't matter anymore.

Are you planning to update this Texture Pack for 1.7, which if my guess is correct, will come out around Halloween?
If I find the time, sure. I don't often play Minecraft anymore, but keeping this pack up to date should be doable. I can't promise everything will be ready by release date, though.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE replace the disc music!
Thy will be done.

All the music discs have custom music now.
I honestly don't know how. The music discs use some pretty weird formats and when I was last messing around with the pack I wasn't able to find any information on how to change the music (I've had to find out everything myself). If anyone can point me to a guide of some sort I'd love to add new disc music. I've got more than enough music to fill them up.

The file size might grow even more, though, but I guess it'd be worth it.
You sir, deserve a diamond.

Edit: After playing for a while, the music started playing... I wish I could give you more diamonds.

SO AWESOME. Thanks for updating!
And here we go, we're live again for the first time in a few months. I figured now was the time, what with Oracle of Ages and Oracle of Seasons finally hitting the 3DS e-shop. There might still be a few kinks in the cable, so please do report it if anything's unusual or missing.

Have a nice day, and do check out the Oracle games on 3DS if you have the chance, they really are quite marvellous.

I'd love to see an update. It shouldn't be that hard with only the crops and new redstone stuff to add.
I think I have to add some mobs as well. An update has been in the works for a while, but I just can't find the time to actually finish it. The dropbox link should link to the latest beta, it should work but will have some missing textures.

Are these textures taken straight from a copyrighted game? If so, this submission is considered illegal...

I'm usually one of those people who checks and double-checks every rule before ever posting anything, so this pack being illegal would surprise me. I just went and checked the rules again and can't seem to find anything about using copyrighted material. Am I missing something?

Having a rule like this in place would seem rather odd as well. Non-profit fan-made derivative works don't tend to be the cause of any legal issues, as this would entail a staggeringly high and very prohibitive cost on top of the negative publicity, which would probably more than offset any possible positive gains from such a lawsuit. I'm sure fan works are covered under quite a few fair use legislations as well, although my knowledge of copyright law isn't quite extensive enough to claim this with any degree of certainty.

That being said, I can't say everything here is an original creation, although most textures have been recoloured or in some way altered to better suit the Minecraft environment.

I must say I'm quite surprised, this is by no means the only Legend of Zelda based texture pack (or the most popular) and most of those feature at least some textures or images taken straight from one or more copyrighted games. I can't help but think a policy like this would only end up hurting this site in the long run, especially considering the popularity of the various video game based texture packs.

I don't receive any monetary compensation for this texture pack, the sole reason it's here is because I'd feel rather selfish using it exclusively for personal use. If you want to take it down, so be it, but I'm trying and failing to come up with anyone who could possibly benefit from this.

In most cases it's not an issue, especially not with older games like this, but where it may cause issues is, for instance, somebody ripping textures from Skyrim and making a pack out of those. I suppose without any monetary gain it's not that big of a deal, but, regardless it is copyright infringement and it does fall under that. If we enforce one area of copyright (ie, if somebody was stealing a pack with original content that was made on PMC), we can't simply ignore the other side of copyright of taking textures that are copyrighted to corporations and video game developers.

There is a rule somewhere in the rule list about not using remixed/unoriginal content (content which is not yours, not copyrighted to you, etc). It's more or less common sense as well, but, it's in there somewhere - it may need to be made more clear, though. The rules change quite often.

It isn't the only pack, but I have deleted at least one for being a blatant "take textures from popular game and put into MC with minimal effort". It could also fall under unoriginality, but that's not my concern here.

We're discussing the best way to handle this among the site moderators, and will let you know how it turns out.

I can't imagine Skyrim textures being a terribly noticeable thing to turn into a texture pack, but considering recent events I don't blame you for being cautious around Bethesda.

If it's any help, I doubt "minimal effort" would apply here, since it's a 100% completed pack with quite a few custom or altered sprites. I've wasted quite a few hours of my life creating this pack (quite possibly more than I've actually spent playing Minecraft since creating this pack) and I've been working on this pack on and off since Beta 1.3 (I think), so It's hardly a quick and easy copy-paste job.

I'm not as familiar with the DMCA and other copyright legislations as I should be, but aren't sites which host public content considered "safe havens", where it's impossible to sue the host of a free public forum for content uploaded by its users (e.g. Youtube), forcing copyright holders to file a lawsuit against the content creator and not the public host?

I also think you might be failing to make the distinction between using copyrighted material for other purposes (e.g. using textures from Zelda in Minecraft) and uploading content created by someone else and in a way stealing the credit and recognition the original creator deserves (e.g. downloading a texture pack and reuploading it).

Concerning this, I would urge you to update the rules if copyrighted materials presumably being used under fair use really are forbidden, as the closest rule I've been able to find is "Do not upload Texture packs that someone else created", which seems more like a rule against reuploading existing texture packs.

I'm probably wasting far too much time defending this texture pack, since not having to update both this and the Minecraft forums thread would probably give me a bit more free time at the small cost of not getting as much constructive criticism. But if this rule does come to pass It would mean the loss of quite a few very decent texture packs, which would be a shame for those who aren' t as capable of creating their own texture packs.

Again, do as you please. I am but a guest, but it would be nice to stick around, I quite like it here.

Well, I meant any recent game in general. Skyrim is just a popular one off the top of my head.

The minimal effort thing wasn't directed at this pack - I can tell you've spent a lot of time on it, and that's why it wasn't deleted right away.

There's been a lot of controversy over what is "fair use" and what isn't, really. Down to its basic component there isn't much different from using textures from other texture packs compared to using textures from other games - the only difference, like I said, is they belong to other members of the Minecraft community. We would much rather be proactive as a team and take the initiative to prevent infringement than to simply let it all get uploaded and wait for the owners to send us DMCA takedowns and all sorts of legal issues (which does happen quite a bit - a lot of sites steal our content).

This site strives on original content, and that's what we like to see. This pack is original in its own in that it does have a lot of its own unique content & personal touches to it, so I don't think your pack is at any sort of risk at this point. What we're mostly trying to root out and stop are the who steal textures from other games simply to gain experience.

I do think there's quite a difference, though. As an analogy, for an image uploading site It's like the difference between uploading an image you drew based on a video game (using copyrighted characters and concepts from that game) and uploading an image someone else drew. I can't help but think there are both legal and ethical differences between these 2 actions.

I can certainly empathise with your arguments and actions (I'm no stranger to moderating a substantial community), but you might be acting perhaps a bit too restrictive and risk-averse. Although for packs which do solely use textures ripped directly from a specific source I can understand taking action. Especially if people really are as obsessed with diamonds as they seem to be around here.

As an aside, apparently I've had this pack here for over 3 weeks already, I'm quite surprised it took this long for this discussion to take place. Has this recently been decided or am I only now attracting any kind of attention?

It's getting late, and I've probably been neglecting the paper I'm working on a bit too much by constantly checking for updates here, so this is probably my last reply for a while. Take care,

There's a difference between creating a 3D model based on a copyrighted character, and ripping a 3D model from a game and using it: that's what I'm getting at. Your analogy is flawed in that in this case, it's the ripped aspect; the fact that it's the content, not the -idea-, that's being used.

If this pack was purely content that you created by hand, but was designed with Zelda in mind, then I'd have no qualms with it and that would have been the end of the discussion. My only worry is that you say it uses content ripped from one of the games.

As for the attention; it was just now that it was brought up. I had purged an account of tiny texture packs that used ripped content from a game (mind you he was also breaking a few other rules), and one of the other moderators brought this submission up, so I thought I'd ask about it.

you know what guys i think you should leave him alone if he wants to make a zelda texture pack then let him its not illegal because you can never recreate the same textures as in the game coz its al pixelated in minecraft even if it is pixelated in tLoZ it will be completely different in minecraft because of the difference between the make up the graphics is completely different

You might want to check the dates - this was over 4 months ago. His submission wasn't deleted, so.. clearly we decided not to do anything about it :)

From what I could tell he does use textures directly from a specific LoZ game, so the "make up" isn't different, in some cases it's exactly the same, but I think it covers fair use in this case.

I'd love to, but I'm afraid I don't have access to the textures. It might be a bit harder than just throwing together sprites as well...

You may want to fix up the biome shading. In areas like Taiga, Mountain and Snow, there is grey grass and grey tall grass. This may require extra work but, Why not make 4 texture packs for each season?
I'm not really a fan of changing texture packs, even if it's with a mod. And the whole appeal was meant to be that one pack would encompass all the different seasons. Don't forget that the seasons in OoS didn't act like seasons at all, but more like regional climates.

Winter grass is sort of grey in the original games, BTW. I'm working on what might end up being the 2.0 for this pack, though, which has more faithful season colours and gives them a new distribution (where, say, it still only snows in winter, but at least you'll get autumn forests as well). More on that soon, hopefully.
Well OK then. Which biomes are which seasons by the way?
I'd have to look it up, but I think desert and grass desert are autumn, the dense forests summer, less dense forests spring and tundra and taiga winter. The new biome distrubution I'm working on will be pretty similar but with some overlap, because I've noticed that since they redid the biomes I haven't been seeing as many red trees as I used to, which was sad because they looked quite nice...
Do you know when the next version of the Texture Pack will come out?

See the update log for the new biome distribution, if you're interested.

Picture 13 looks like the Missing No. :D
Fun fact: It's because it is MissingNo. :D
I'm quite obsessed with the glitches in the original Pokemon games, so in a moment of boredom I decided to build myself a Missingno. It came in quite handy for screenshots for my Pokemon Red and Blue Pack as well (which I'm in the process of updating).
May you please post it on planet minecraft!
It doesn't work at all anymore, though. If I ever find the time I may do some rudimentary conversions, but the modern versions of Minecraft have way too much stuff. It's nearly impossible to make a complete texture pack at this point using such limited source material. Minecraft used to be all about less is more and using limited resources to create infintely different things, now there's a block for literally everything. Turning all that into Pokémon won't be easy.

I also haven't played Minecraft in ages (perhaps for much the same reasons), so I'm not terribly motivated to update it.

If you want to download an outdated version, here you go: https://copy.com/D2YsdmqMu3J2fQ4K
You might be able to combine it with this texture pack to get a somewhat decent result.
