After browsing through a lot of servers, I realise a lot of immediate turn-off's within only a few minutes of gameplay. Also, a lot of immediate positives. Here is a few tips on how to make a good first impression on your server.
+ Welcome Party!
One of the things that makes me love a server is when I first log in, there is a lot of people saying 'welcome!' 'hi!' 'sup, welcome!' I love this as it makes people feel welcome and want to see these people again. The issue with large servers is there is no 'welcome', as it is so common to see newbies. If you have a large server, or even if you don't, hire some 'Helper' or 'Greeter' staff, who can help and make new people welcome.
+ Want a Tour?
Another thing I like is when someone can tour you around spawn, as this shows a friendly community who will help new people get started. If you don't have Helpers, you should get them to show new people around.

One of the most important things in a server is a wonderful spawn. Without this, players will think that the server isn't up to scratch. If your spawn doesn't make new members say something like 'cool spawn!' then you should hire a good builder to do the job!
+ Need Some Stuff?
Its also brilliant when a good player helps a newbie by giving him/her some basic provisions. Whether it be an old set of iron armour with a few hits left or an enchanted wooden sword, this shows a helpful, generous community and is a good way to show community rather than a kit.
+ Minigames!
I'm not a fan of when a 'survival' server has creative, survival, towny, factions, PVP, non PVP, Arena, skyblock, and a billion other worlds due to lag, I prefer it when it has a solid theme, but all players want to have a little goof around, so some minigames always are great. I just love it on a server when someone says, 'Hey, why don't we all play some spleef'? It's always great, and I love to have a little break from whatever I was doing.
+ Need a Faction?
Something I really hate on Towny or Factions is when I join and I can't join a town/faction. It ruins the point of the game, whats the point of playing if no-one will have me? If someone asks you if you want to join one, it makes you feel appreciated and all warm and fuzzy :3.
- Oh, you want to leave spawn? That's a shame.
I hate spawns that take FOREVER to get out of. I don't want to walk 15 minutes and activate a billion pressure plates in the most complicated labyrinth ever to get to wilderness. I just want a nice stroll and an easy exit.
- DIE DIE DIE!
I hate it when full d. armour guys come rushing out at me once I leave spawn to get my starter items. That's why I hate 'drop-down' spawns, it is so full of spawnkillers. Its not PVP arena, even if PVP is activated. (Unless it is PVP Arena, doh).
- Starter Junk.
When I spawn I want useful items. A stone tool set maybe, a stack of wood. Not a bone, 4 stone, 9 string and a button. What use will that to me? If you give players some useful stuff to start with, they will like you more.

- Over-Helping OP's.
If an OPped helps me, I'm great! I love it if they tour me, maybe give me a starter kit. But if they follow me, tending to my every need, if I see a wolf, they come rushing and give me 64 bones. I hate that. Help me, not spoil me. Thats not how to play the game.

The worlds do not reset! I can't find wilderness anywhere! I wasted 3 nights to get...nowhere! Just houses and more houses. All griefed. No one would answer me. I never entered it again.
