This blog, i invented, just to say what i think about some skins and how i think everyone, even the laziest person can improove his/her skills in skinning.

WATCH UPDATE LOG TO SEE WHAT I RECENTLY CHANGED

Some things that make me go RAGE:
(you can skip this, skinning tips are at the bottom)

Stop making Ender, Steve, Creeper or Hoodieskins.

Those skins help no one and the only thing theyre supporting is group pressure D:
I saw really good skins going to the neverland with 5 diamonds only because they were posted, exactly the same moment, together with a hoodie-derp-girl-hurr-creeper-thingy, wich got 30 diamonds, FACEPALM.
Once i made those skins myself .... and i can tell you iam not proud ^^
I still have one up on pmc but thats just because it was my very first skin :P

Stop overusing the same shading template again and again.

Those skins made with these so called *helping programms* might look awsome on the first look.
On the second look ..... awwww not again exactly the same shading.
Sure those skins will get a lot views, dias, dls and and and, but can you be proud if you watch ur submissions and
nearly every skin has the same shading/light effects ?

Stop stealing.

No comment ... really just gtfo pmc.

Stop skin hopping.

I saw users typing in every submission they did not like : DATS UGLY
wtf ......
You dear derp user could give feedback or tell us skinners WHAT you find ugly, that would help much more.

Stop insulting me for being rude to newbies.
I got tons of pms wich said something like, WHY YOU WRITE SUCH A BLOG, YOU WERE ALSO A NOOB.
Sure.
I was, but this blog is to help not to insult someone Oo
And if you (those ppl who pm me with mentioned content) cant stand my *sarcasm + rage part* of this blog then why the hell you read it ?

Stop blaming someone for abusing the update log.
Sometimes PMC does not show the actual skin or pictures, clear your browser and java cache and look at it again.
Usefull programms for PC-cleaning at bottom of blog.

PMS i like to show here because they are maybe usefull .... or funny, origin stays anonymous ofc. :

Q: Did you ever create a creeper skin ?
A: I did shame on me xD but as i said everyone starts as a skinning derp =)

Q: The skins in the examples look nice where do i find them.
A: I STOLE THEM xD ..... nah check my submissions ^^

Q: How old are you ?
A: 26 but without coffee i feel like 102 xD

Q: Your skins look ugly !!!!
A: Then why are your eyes not morphing into cancer ? D:

Here a list of some steps you should follow while making a skin, you dont have to but i think it might help.

Click Me <<< BASICS IN USING MY FAV. EDITOR >>> Click Me

Editor links you find in the helpfull Programs Section.

1. Get a picture, or draw a basic picture, of what you want to make a skin of, better invent something on yourself.
Google picsearch is your best friend for finding an example picture for your work.
And for hosting images i usual use this: Imageshack

2. Get shure that you have a direction, where *the light* comes from, that will result in much better skins then using a shading template.

3. NEVER place 2 blocks of the same color next to each other (brighten or darken it by 1), diagonal its okay to place the same color.
And create shadows by darken a dot by 2 steps.
Create lighten areas by brighten the dot one by one.
Thx to Dinowcookie to mention that in some situations its better to place 2 of the same color next to each other.
For example i will imagine a dark cape, it has no shadows (on the most parts, because its dark itself), it would be plane black and has no grey or lighten blocks, maybe only on the shoulders or at the neck.
Well here i suggest that its the best to finish the part of the skin, and take a close look to it after you finished.

4. Use the helmet layer to create optical illusions of hair and eyes, u can manage it easy to create holes or hairstrings in that way.
Or make moving eyes by placing the eye on the head and the hole on the helmet layer.
Here dont forget to paint the head itself, the skin might look ugly otherwise if the user wears a helmet ingame.

Click Me <<< BASICS IN MAKING A MOVING EYE AND HEAD >>> Click Me

Click Me <<< BASICS IN CREATING HAIR >>> Click Me

5. Create glow effects by placing a very bright dot, then mix the dot color with the surrounding color and light it up as high as possible, so you get the illusion of a light.
Leave a black or skincolored part between the light and the glow to create the illusion of a light inside a socket.

Click Me <<< BASICS IN MAKING A LIGHT EFFECT >>> Click Me

6. Dont forget to color the top and bottom of the body part AND the top of the legs.
Create natural shadows there, these areas are hidden but they have to be darker then the outsides.
Same for the inside of the arms.
Very often users forget to color those areas, it will look ugly then, especally when the skin is walking.

7. Dont use shading tools, it will look too monotone or too unoriginal as mentioned above.
Handmade stuff will look 10 times better.

8. In my opinion you should just use the basic skin editor on skindex and open the file (for the correction) later with paint.
The easy things do the best work, believe me.
But its okay to CHECK the shading with a shader tool, maybe adobe, but dont create the shading with it.

9. TAKE TIME, a good skin isnt made in under 2 hours.
Paint the skin and save it, then rewatch it 1 or 2 days later with the picture (If you have one) of it in a second window.
YOU will find fails or something you can improove.

10. When you are ready in your opinion, make a screen and let friends watch the screen first, never send the skin file, even if your shure you could trust.
Short, get feedback before you upload a submission.

11. Make Shure you got 20+ fitting additional tags for the skin, the more Tags you got wich fit, the more the skin will be found on PMC.
Tags are one of the most important things to get a skin popular.

12. Invest time in answering comments on your skins and accept tipps of users who found something wrong with your skin.
Dont abuse the comment board, if you are not shure what someone said, send him a PM to prevent spam.

13. Save your skin while your working on it, maybe pc crash or something like that could destroy your work.
Another good idea is to save your work on an Usb-stick.

14. Use the updatelog and updatefunction of pmc,
Do not reupload skins, update them.
That prevents spam and your subs can see the update.

15. Combine programs like Gimp and Paint.NET with the Minecraft-Skin-Viewer: You can have the different windows next to each other. Save the image in Paint.NET or overwrite the .png with Gimp, the Viewer automatically updates the skin it's showing! really useful and those programs definately are a lot more advanced than editors that are purely made for minecraft-skins. Thx to mischajay to mention this.

Some freeware Progams wich are helpfull for skinning:

GIMP
The origin of this program is linux, its freeware and its awsome.

BASIC EDITOR

Pmc itself has no editor, so i use this one here sometimes, easy to handle and well programmed.

PHOTOSHOP TRIAL EDITION
Its just a trial version but i lasts some days, and it was helpfull.

ONLINE PHOTOEDITOR
I recomment advanced editing knowledge (thx to Aelous for showing me that)

PAINTNET
Here we also have no flippable skinmodel so i recommend advanced knowledge (thx to Darkdirxer)

FREE IMAGEHOST

Here you can host images for free and link then in blogs or skins.

SKINEDIT
Thx to Reacraft to remid me of that beautiful easy editor.

CC-CLEANER
ATTENTION: Be carefull to use the registry-cleaner of this programm it recommends advanced knowledge of PCs.
Very usefull programm to clean java and browsercache. So you dont see the wrong previews in PMC.

SKIN-VIEWER
Also useable on smartphones with java suport.

Also a good idea to check shading is, load your skin as a 3D file into your Nvidia (if you have) settings monitor, yes that works ^^. Images will come soon.

MORE PICTURES WILL COME SOON, HAVE MERCY WITH ME xD
IF YOU FIND GRAMMAR FAILS FEEL FREE TO TAKE THEM WITH YOU xD

I've just been looking at all skinning tutorials so I can have help with my skins, and I am a kid so I don't think my mom would let me spend a whole 2 hours on skinning, and I can't download skinning programs ( like I said I'm a kid ) so I'm stuck using minersneedcoolshoes! its okay though because I saved a blank thing so i upload it and make skins from scratch.
