In the new update 1.2.5 there is now a pick block key for creative.
Here are some cheats to get blocks:
  • Pick block on monster spawners to get one.
  • Pick block on the portal bit on nether portal to get portals.
  • Pick block on mobs for bedrock.
  • Pick block on growing wheat for crops.
  • Pick block on growing pumpkin/melon for a grey stem.
  • Pick block on a moving piston for a weird grey square.
