Everyone or most people know that in Minecraft version 1.8 item IDs will no longer exist. This is actually bugging me because of the fact that I've spent so much time trying to remember all of the item IDs.
Some people don't care about this matter mainly because they dont use command blocks or the /give command as much as I or other people do. Although on CraftBukkit/Spigot servers with the plugin "Essentials" or any other plugin related, Essentials provides with easy access to built in commands and about 100 more commands to have fun with or to help with additional things in the server that could be used in the situation that the player is in at their time.
Anyways, moving on, Essentials will most likely readd he item IDs if the plugin is present and that might or might not change due to the fact that most people don't like the idea of removing item IDs and replacing them with this crazy "Minecraft:(Item_Name)", I don't know if Jeb or Dinnerbone or Searge or whoever is working on Minecraft at the moment will ever change it back to having those good old item IDs or maybe they'll make it so that we can have both item IDs and the new "Minecraft:(Item_Name)". That would probably benifit others that are sobbing about this removal of the item IDs.
But on the other hand some people think that item IDs should be removed because they are unnecessary randomized numbers and are not easy to remember so they generally like the new "Minecraft:(Item_Name)". I Personally think that they should have both item IDs and the new "Minecraft:(Item_Name)".

Its horrible, I suggest keeping both methods, number and text
eg:
/give @a stone
/give @a 1
Now I gotta memorize everything again. I hate 1.8

There is literally no good reason to keep the numerical ID system. It's limited to 4096 IDs for blocks and 31999 IDs for items. With everything using their unlocalized names as the IDs, with just a 8-character unlocalized system (it actually isn't, just using it as a demonstration), you can have 656100000000 different IDs. And since the unlocalized names system doesn't seem to be limited, you can register a finite amount of items and blocks compared to old system which only allowed 36095 different IDs, not including metadata. Plus, there will be no ID conflicts, no configuration file changing to make the mod work, coding will be so much easier, there's just so many different possibilities with the new system. This is definately one of the best updates Mojang has ever decided to make.

Because PMC doesn't want you to put IPs or URLs as tags, which are made with the periods.
