Hello everyone,
This is my first blog, about a subject which I find really important and, if not used correctly, can bug the ever living -snip- out of me.
Spelling in Blog posts.
If you are writing a blog, or even a description for a project or mod, be sure to not make it like this:
"hey guys today im explaning you this patr of MC"
Rather make it like:
"Hey guys, [name] here, and today I'm making clear this part of Minecraft for you."
For people who don't know how to properly spell and use grammar in their posts, here are some tips for general use.
1. Know your homonyms
The mistake I see the most, people forget how to spell words that sound the same. For example, you don't want to know how many times I've seen "their", "there" and "they're" getting mixed up. I'll give you a list of the most common homonyms and what they're used for.
-They're: Synonym for "they are".
-Their: Possessive pronoun (their project: the project of them).
-There: A place (Look, it's over there!).
-Your: Another possessive
-You're: Synonym for "you are".
-Wear: to physically have something on your body
-Where: Interrogative (asking) pronoun of place.
-To: Pronoun before a full verb (to do), or one used with for example "give": "I give this to you".
-Too: Another pronoun, this one meaning "too much".
Two: The number 2.
There's lots more of these, they're all summed up on http://www.homophones.com/.
2. If you don't know how to spell a certain word
If you can't figure out how you need to spell something, you have two options: 1. Use a synonym or 2. Look it up. This would make a huge difference in mostly the project descriptions.
3. Punctuation and capitals
Another great problem in project descriptions: The punctuation. I have seen way too many descriptions like this, for example:
ok guys this is my first project hope you like it if you do plz gimme a diamond bye
With correct punctuation the above text would be this:
Ok guys, this is my first project. I hope you like it, and if you do please give me a diamond.
Quite a difference, ain't it?
Also, I is always a capital (I did this).
4. Apostrophes
A bit smaller, but still a substantial amount of the mistakes made, it's easily able to be fixed. There are a couple of rules on this subject:
- Apostrophes are used for possessives (the bed's pillow, the chair's feet). If the word is plural, it should be put after the s: the chairs' feet. Apostrophes are not used to make plurals. Ever. So no player's anymore!
-Apostrophes are also used when leaving away letters: do not becomes don't, and not do'nt. (The o is left away, so the apostrophe replaces the o.)
5. Others
There is a lot of mistakes which can be made. I've summed up all I've seen, but if you have any stupid/random mistakes you feel like sharing, just post'em in the comments below. If you likes this blog, a diamond would be appreciated, as would a favorite. Thanks for reading!
