As I walked up the stairs to the third floor, clutching a candle as to light my way, I thought I heard a noise coming from the kitchen. I followed it to the pantry and opened the door. There, sitting on the floor before me, sat a loaf of bread. I presumed it had fallen for whatever reason, so I picked it back up and set it on a shelf assuring myself that all I had heard was the loaf falling.

Later that night I was awoken, all of a sudden, from my sleep by another sound; something like a door creaking loudly. I thought it nothing at first, but soon after I heard another noise that finally stirred me from my bed. I fumbled for the candle I had set on the nightstand. I once again, carefully, crept down the stairs only to find the pantry door wide open. I thought it might've swung open from a faulty lock or something of the like, but just to be safe I checked the inside. As I peered into the small dark room filled with assorted cans and dried fruits, my eyes finally came upon an empty plastic packaging of some sort. I got closer and shone my candle to it. It was the packaging of that bread I saw earlier!

I thought that was quite odd indeed. Where could it have gone? How could it be gone? For a moment, I thought I must be going mad and tried to wake myself up. It didn't help, but then I suddenly heard a sound from behind me. The dumbwaiter chain was moving upwards. I tried to gather my thoughts as I headed upstairs back to my room, thinking it was all just some illusion of sleep.

As I opened my bedroom door, I saw a loaf of bread sitting quietly on my bed! I cried out in terror and bewilderment. Dropping my candle, I sprinted out the door and down the stairs. I made my way down to the common room, grabbed one of the cavalry sabres that hung over the mantle and yanked it off it's plaque. Now armed, I ran back up the stairs stumbling into furniture in the dark hallway. I ripped open the door to see, lit by the moon, a slice of the bread near the candle I had dropped on the floor.

I quickly brought down the sword I held onto the bread, and cut it clean in two. The loaf, still on the bed, cowered in fear as I approached it. All of a sudden, I felt bad for the poor thing, it had come all this way, but for what?

I then composed myself and apologised for being so rude to not even ask what it had come for, and of course slamming a door on it, and slicing it in half. The bread, still quivering, nodded toward the nightstand that was next to my bed. I walked over and opened the drawer to see what the bread was looking for. Inside was a small book of matches I kept for lighting candles.

I slowly took a match out of the box and lit it. I then picked up the candle I had dropped earlier and touched the match I held to it. Holding the candle over a slice I took from the loaf, I perfectly toasted it! The bread stopped shaking and went completely still. I poked it with the sword I took from downstairs, but nothing happened. So, I ate the piece of toast and then took the loaf back downstairs and set it in the pantry where it belonged.

I'll never know why that bread wanted to be toasted so badly. But, I guess I'll never find out..

Going for regular walks improves your cardiovascular fitness gradually, but don't sweat it if you can't walk this long initially
