Here are a few facts about redstone that are good to know for making simple mechanisms.
When redstone is pointed at a block, it will power that block, and anything touching the block will activate. [Doors, pistons, etc.]
Redstone repeaters when placed have a 1 tick [1/2 sec] delay and can be set to have up to a 4 tick [2 sec] delay by right clicking multiple times.
Redstone torches and repeaters can NOT be placed on glowstone, however redstone can.
Redstone can connect through non-solid blocks. [Glass, slabs, stairs, vines, etc.]
If a block with a redstone torch on it is powered it will turn off the redstone torch.
If you have any questions, please post them in the comments and I will answer them for you, if they are within my knowledge.
