Akira: An anime Review

"TETSUO!" "KANEDA!" "TETSUO!" "KANEDA!" "That's Mr Kaneda to you, Punk!"

If you can't tell, I'm an anime fan. A lot of people here on PMC are. I wanted to start a blog series where I review anime, and tell you  if you should watch it or not. So, I've been planning this for a while, but here's a review of the film that brought anime to the Mainstream in the West:

Akira

Akira is a Masterpiece. Plain and simple. It began as a Manga that went on for 8 mangas at around 300 pages per manga. Before that, it was in a magazine. It was considered revolutionary in the West for its time, and paved the way for anime such as Ghost in the Shell, Battle Angel Alita, along with anime in general.

Please note: It's original dub and sub are rated PG-13, so it has stuff not suitable for younger kids.

Akira: An anime Review
Neo-Tokyo: Where you either die via Biker Gang, Psychic kids blowing stuff up, Rioters, or Riot Police.

The Plot. Don't read if you hate Spoilers

The Plot: The Film takes place in Neo-Tokyo in the year 2019, 31 years after a Nuclear Weapon detonated in Tokyo started World War III. It follows the character Kaneda, as he leads a gang of Bikers into battle against another gang called "The Clowns" in the ruins of Tokyo. He and several friends, including Tetsuo drive through the ruins against the Clowns. Tetsuo crashes into a Psychic kid who had escaped from a gun battle against rioters. a bunch of soldiers come, and arrest Kaneda and his friends, transfer the psychic to a facility, and take Tetsuo to a hospital. At the Police Station, Kaneda meets a girl named Kei, who's involved in a rebellion. He frees her from the Police Station, and she immediately runs off. Tetsuo breaks out of the Hospital, and immediately goes off to find his girlfriend. Tetsuo steals Kaneda's bike, and they ride it until they run into The Clowns again. The Clowns attack Tetsuo, but he beats some of them with his new-found Psychic Powers, and Kaneda and several others show up, and chase the Clowns off. Tetsuo begins getting a migraine related to his abilities, and they return him to the Hospital.

Kaneda meets Kei once again, and saves her life from two soldiers trying to kill her. She takes him to the Headquarters of the Rebellion. Kaneda ends up joining when he hears that they want to free Tetsuo.

Tetsuo, meanwhile, is placed in a hospital room. When he is there alone, three of the Psychics try to kill him. They take the form of toys in the room, and try to kill him there to stop his power from growing. He kills a doctor and several security guards, which cause several armed Riot Troops to come after him, which he also kills. Tetsuo makes his way to where the other psychics are to kill them.

Kaneda, Kei, and several others make it into the Hospital, but their operation is botched when Tetsuo goes on a rampage, ramping up security. Kaneda and Kei hijack a Hovercraft, and go to find Tetsuo.

Tetsuo reaches the nursery, where the Psychics confront him in their Toy forms. They return to normal. After a small battle, Kei, Kaneda, and several soldiers show up. They fight, but aren't able to defeat Tetsuo. Kei and Kaneda are placed under arrest, and Tetsuo learns the location of Akira: Underneath the Olympic Stadium.

In prison, one of the psychics explains that they must stop Tetsuo by using Kei as a medium of communication. When they are let free, the Psychics take Kei to use to fight Tetsuo.

Tetsuo goes to a local bar that he and others attended. He asks for something, and kills the bartender. Later, some of Tetsuo and Kaneda's friends show up. One named Yamagata is killed by Tetsuo, but Kai escapes to find Kaneda.

Akira: An anime Review

Kai and Kei. Get it right.

Tetsuo continues destroying the city as he goes through it to get to the Olympic Stadium. He faces off against a take, and utterly destroys it. People begin seeing him as Akira's resurrection. Tetsuo makes it to the Stadium, and raises Akira's room? I guess? From under the ground. He fights, and defeats Kei, who had the powers of all the psychics going through her. He finds that Akira has been turned into various body parts that were being preserved for study purposes.

At that moment, a group of soldiers and Kaneda arrive. The Colonel explains that Akira's power destroyed him, and the body was being preserved for Future Scientists. Kaneda shoots at Tetsuo with a Laser gun, but before he can kill him, it's battery runs dry. The Military uses an experimental Satellite laser, and successfully cut off his arm. However, he flies into space, and destroys the satellite. The Satellite destroys some stuff on Earth, and then falls.

Tetsuo fixes his arm using metal and stuff around the Stadium. Tetsuo's girlfriend arrives, and Tetsuo begins going out of control. The Colonel tries to explain about the medicine, and how it can control his powers. Tetsuo begins mutating, and he nearly kills the Colonel, but Kaneda and Tetsuo begin battling, saving his life.

Tetsuo finally becomes larger, and larger, and he begins engulfing his girlfriend and Kaneda. He ends up killing his girlfriend by accident. The Psychics bring Akira back, who had transcended from a human body. He begins engulfing Tetsuo into another dimension. The Psychics move Kai, Kei, and the colonel to safety, while they try to save Kaneda. Kaneda is saved, and ends up seeing theirs and Tetsuo's memories. Akira destroys Tokyo once again, killing lots of innocent lives. Kaneda, Kei, and Kai reunite, and ride motorcycles through the ruins, and it's a happy ending! Yay!

The Review:

I personally liked it. While it isn't for everyone, it's certainly for someone who likes a good action movie, and it's something every anime fan should definitely see. It's a bit confusing, but it's still pretty good. There's some disturbing images, but there aren't much, and they aren't really all that scary.

Plot: 9/10: It had a pretty good "Power Corrupts/Next stage of Human Evolution" type plot. It was well done, and brilliantly executed.

Art: 8/10: While not for everyone, it had a pretty good art style, and it holds up pretty well today. The visuals are just stunning, and it all works really amazingly. There's also some really trippy shots.

Soundtrack: 10/10: Oh my God! This is one of the most amazing soundtracks I have ever heard! It forgoes Orchestra instruments in favor of... I don't know. It has everything from a Rock track, to traditional Japanese music.

Voice Acting: I don't know/10: This is subjective. I have seen both dubs, and the sub. All are good. The 2001 Dub is my favorite, due to some background dialogue, and it has Matthew Mercer voicing Kai. (Not Kei.) but they're all pretty good.

Overall: 9/10

That concludes my blog on Akira. I will leave you with this:

I was just talking about it with a friend of mine, and he said:

I don't know what to say about that...

Hmmm...
Reading this blog without the plot part because of spoilers is a bit lacking. I still don't have a proper idea what the movie is about. Yes Ghost in the shell say something to me knowing in which direction it could turn + the pictures but still it lacks in my eyes.

For the rest, it peaked my interest so maybe I go watch it.
