An Odd Encounter

Originally for the"Cave Hanger Contest".
But due to an unmentioned 250 character limit, I decided not to enter this.
"Hmm, that's odd," Steve thought to himself. He struck the gold block. Again, he struck it. Something was behind him. Something... familiar. One more time he slapped the gold. Whatever it was, it moved when he mined. Wait. There were 2 of whatever "it" was. He wanted to turn around, but figured "they" would jump upon him. So, he devised a plan to get the jump on them. The player went on mining, until the sounds were nearly a swing away. Quickly, he wildly swung around, making his pickaxe collide with a head.
There was a loud "Grr" sound, and as Steve's pickaxe came into contact with the zombie's head, the spider leaped upon him, pinning him into the ground, and biting viciously. Quickly, Steve switched to his sword, and started stabbing the spider. It backed off a few blocks, but then charged at him again, knocking Steve back some more. This time, he got his Knockback II stone sword, and hit that spider far back. Both entities were low on health, but each fought for their life, reacting quickly, Steve grabbed his bow, and fired a few shaky shots. But since he was low on health, he missed every one, and the spider closed in.
Now, you probably weren't wondering what the zombie was doing, because he was decapitated. Yet all this time he was walking around, trying to find his head. Now, back to the story.
The spider closed in. A weak but strong player was ready to defend himself. Then, all of a sudden, the zombie lept madly at the spider, tore his little red-eyed face off, and kicked his body into lava. What Steve witnessed was more terrifying than falling down a ravine. Once the scuffle was over, a mutant mob lay before him. A zombie with the head of a spider. "Son of a birch tree..." Steve muttered under his breath.
This "Spombie" or "Zider"( Whatever you want to call it ) was now ready to take on the player. He turned it's head. "Ah, there he is," he thought. But wait. There was more than one Steve. There were Steves everywhere. And they were all reddish. "So many... an entire army," the zider thought to himself. Suddenly, he felt outnumbered. Flailing his arms into the air, he turned, ran, tripped, and fell into the lava. "Holy sheep," steve thought to himself, "what the heck did I just witness?"
He had won. Sort of. He barely did anything, yet it was the strangest sight he had ever beheld. "Now what?" he thought to himself. The ladder was gone, and he had no blocks in his inventory, and his pick was nearly done for. Nothing to do but sit. "But then again..." he thought, "I could just jump into the lava." But he had so much loot... He couldn't. He could. No. He wouldn't. He should. He didn't know what to do. He sat down.
Suddenly, out of nowhere, there was a flash of purple light. Before him stood an obsidian rectangle, with swirling purple inside of it. He got up. What was this? He walked closer, and stretched his head towards the portal. Out of the swirling purple, came another player. She grabbed her diamond pick and broke one of the obsidian blocks. As the portal flickered out, Steve stared at her. "Wow," he thought, "she's amazing." The woman stared at Steve. "Huh, he's kinda cute," she thought.
Grasping her senses, she put out her skinny, blocky arm. "The name's Alex," she stated, "and you are...?".
"Steve," he replied, shaking her hand. "Why are you here?"
Looking at the portal, Alex chuckled. "Sorry. I must have startled you with the portal. I've come from the nether in search for help."
Steve lifted an eyebrow. "Startled? Not really. I witnessed an odd encounter right before you came. Now, about that help. Help for what?"
"To take down an evil tyrant who plans to take over this world." Alex replied. "I know it sounds crazy, but once see it, you'll understand."
